Mold in Dry Climates

Carl Brahe

Mold requires moisture to grow. In places like Colorado where the humidity is chronically low we don't have the mold problems that people experience in places where the air is always moist. Debilitating mold growth can occur even ion the driest climates under the right conditions. A family in Douglas County were forced out of their dream home by mold growing in the attic as the result of a small roof leak that saturated insulation and caused mold to grow for years where it could not be seen.

The family's belongings were mainly discarded not salvageable. They moved into an RV in the driveway while the $40,000 remediation is taking place. They blame shoddy construction during the home building boom before the last real estate bust. Their insurance company is refusing to cover any damages because the family had no specific mold damage rider on their homeowner's policy.
